Teyana Taylor has been ordered to pay $70,000 to her former husband, Iman Shumpert, after a judge ruled she was in contempt of court during their protracted divorce. The decision, issued after a July 25 hearing, adds another chapter to a dispute that has increasingly spilled beyond the courtroom.

Court filings obtained by Us Weekly show that Taylor and Shumpert appeared before the judge after accusing one another of violating the confidentiality provisions of their divorce settlement. Shumpert claimed Taylor breached the agreement by posting a video on Instagram in March addressing media coverage of their split. The settlement prohibited either party from publicly disclosing any details of the judgment.

The court sided with Shumpert, finding Taylor in “willful contempt” of the Final Judgment and Decree of Divorce. The $70,000 award will cover Shumpert’s legal expenses. Shumpert had initially sought a $1,000 fine and a 20-day jail sentence, though the court imposed only the financial penalty.

Taylor’s attorneys countered that Shumpert himself had leaked confidential information to the press, but the judge rejected the claim, citing a lack of evidence. The order criticized Taylor’s legal team for failing to conduct adequate due diligence before filing their contempt petition, describing their approach as insufficiently supported by facts.

Taylor, who stars in The One Battle After Another, also asked the court to jail Shumpert, but withdrew the request. The order further noted that she refused to answer questions from Shumpert’s counsel regarding her assets and income, arguing such inquiries were irrelevant to the matter at hand.

The ruling deepens the acrimony between the Grammy-nominated singer and the former NBA champion. The couple, who married in 2016 and share two daughters, publicly announced their separation in 2023. Once a celebrated pairing in music and sports circles, their relationship has since devolved into a series of contentious legal confrontations.

With this latest decision, the court has reinforced the consequences of violating confidentiality orders in divorce cases. The penalty not only adds financial strain but also signals that public commentary — even on personal social media — can carry significant legal repercussions when agreements are in place.

Their battle appears far from over, and the costs continue to rise.
