Reports indicate that Lupe Fiasco is extending his impact beyond music, stepping into academia with a notable new role.
On Wednesday (Jan. 1), the Chicago artist shared that he will join the faculty as a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute. Lupe is set to lead a rap course within the Peabody Conservatory’s groundbreaking four-year hip-hop program, which is slated to debut in 2025.
Lupe shared on Instagram, “Thrilled to share that I’ll be joining the faculty at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Fall 2025 as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, teaching Rap as part of the groundbreaking new 4-year Hip Hop Degree Program led by the visionary Professor @wendelpatrickofficialmusic.” He added, “The @peabodyinstitute is one of the oldest music conservatories in America. World renowned for its rigorous training and for producing some of the world’s greatest musicians, and I’m honored to contribute to this legacy doing what I love most, Rap.”
Despite his new role, the rapper will remain a professor at MIT while advancing his research position at Yale University.
Additionally, Lupe recognized Wendel Patrick, the program’s esteemed director and lead professor.
The four-year bachelor’s program in hip-hop is currently recruiting aspiring turntablists, lyricists, beatboxers, and producers eager to elevate their craft. The program description reads, “Following the one-on-one studio model of a traditional conservatory education, you will develop your skills in lessons with a private instructor — turntable majors will study with a world-class turntablist; rap majors with a chart-topping emcee.” “And you’ll get to perform, with and for your colleagues, in an environment that encourages experimentation and authenticity.”
Students must act quickly, as the application deadline approaches this Friday, January 3, after a brief extension.
