The two-time Academy Award winner, celebrated for his commanding performances, shares the screen with A$AP Rocky and Ice Spice in the action-drama Highest 2 Lowest. Away from filming, he gravitates toward the pulse of modern hip-hop, keeping artists like Memphis heavyweight Moneybagg Yo in regular rotation and spotlighting a little-known collaboration between Smino and Samara Cyn.
During an August 12 appearance on Good Morning America, Washington was asked about his “amazing rap repertoire.” Smino noticed the moment and responded online with a meme of the actor, a lighthearted nod that also reflected Washington’s unexpected credibility within music circles. His familiarity with current rap trends resonates with artists who see him as more than a Hollywood icon—someone genuinely plugged into their culture.
On The Run-Through with Vogue podcast, A$AP Rocky revealed Washington’s tastes extend further, citing his interest in Pooh Shiesty, NLE Choppa, and more from Moneybagg Yo’s catalog. Washington confirmed the lineup himself, calling music “a passion,” and naming “Brand New Teeth” by Smino and Samara Cyn as his current favorite.

Still, Washington approaches music with an analog sensibility. Preparing to portray David King in Highest 2 Lowest, he didn’t rely on a meticulously curated playlist to find the character’s rhythm.
“I don’t have a playlist. I don’t even know how to do that, to be honest with you,” he told co-host Michael Strahan. Instead, he pulled from music he already loved—sounds that naturally complemented the film’s atmosphere.
