Basketball Hall of Famers Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady are now limited partners in the Buffalo Bills’ ownership group.
The Associated Press reports Carter, McGrady, and eight other minority owners were approved on Wednesday (Dec. 11) by NFL team owners at the league’s winter meetings. For the first time in the Bills’ franchise history, minority owners have been added to the team.
In an official statement, Bills owner Terry Pegula expressed his gratitude for the addition of the new partners.
“The team has added a diverse array of limited partners spanning the world of business, sports, and entertainment,” Pegula said. “The group includes many with deep personal ties to the Buffalo Bills as well as connections to key geographic areas for the organization.”
“They all have all achieved high levels of success in their respective industries and we’re grateful for their interest in our team, our sport, and the future of the Buffalo Bills. Most of them have a personal attachment with our team, Western New York or Southern Ontario which was a very important factor to me,” he continued.
Pegula also noted that Carter and McGrady will help grow the Bills’ market in Toronto areas where they once played.
The new ownership group also includes private equity firm Arctos along with corporate executives and venture capitalists.
Earlier this year, NFL team owners approved a measure that now permits private equity funds to invest in franchises. Until the new measure was passed, the NFL’s ownership rules were the most restrictive in professional sports.
Both born in Florida, McGrady and Carter are cousins who began their early careers in the NBA as teammates on the Toronto Raptors.
At Carter’s Hall of Fame induction in October, McGrady was one of Carter’s presenters.
In his 22-year career, Carter won the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year and was named an eight-time NBA All-Star.
Selected as the number nine pick of the 1997 NBA Drafts, McGrady went on to be a seven-time All-Star. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2017.
