22 years after its release, Eminem‘s autobiographical film 8 Mile continues to generate significant numbers. In March, the movie’s accompanying soundtrack surpassed 2.4 billion streams on Spotify.
Released in 2002, the album marked 50 Cent’s debut as Eminem’s protege and featured music by Gangstarr, Obie Trice, Jay-Z, Xzibit, Macy Gray, and Rakim. The soundtrack included hit songs “Wanksta,” “Rap Game,” and “Lose Yourself.” The soundtrack won an Academy Award in 2003 for Best Original Song with “Lose Yourself.”
The film stars Eminem as Rabbit and co-stars Anthony Mackie, Mekhi Phifer, Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon, Taryn Manning, and the late Brittany Murphy. Eminem won “Best Male Performance” at the MTV Movie Awards in 2003. The soundtrack debuted at #1 in 2002, with over 700,000 copies sold.
The film continues to be a trending topic on social media 20 years later with fans speculating who really won the rap battles.
In 2023, 50 Cent shared that he had received Eminem’s okay to make an 8 Mile television series. The mentor and protege have many projects in the works, and Eminem is open to a collaboration album with 50 Cent. Both were in attendance to support Dr. Dre at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in March.
As a guest on The Tonight Show, Dr. Dre revealed that Eminem is working on a new album slated for late 2024.
