Before he became a global music icon, Drake was known simply as Jimmy Brooks, the wheelchair-bound teen from the beloved Canadian series Degrassi: The Next Generation. Over eight years and more than 100 episodes, the Toronto native laid the groundwork for a career that would later transform the landscape of hip-hop.
This early chapter of his life takes center stage again in Degrassi: Whatever It Takes, an upcoming documentary set to premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival. The film promises to explore the series’ lasting influence on teen culture and television storytelling through the eyes of its cast, creators, and fans. According to Billboard, screening details will be announced by August 12, ahead of the festival running from September 4 to 14.
‘Degrassi”s Impact and Drake’s Rise from Screen to Stage
Directed by Lisa Rideout, the documentary shines a light on Degrassi’s groundbreaking approach to difficult subjects like violence and school shootings. It revisits one of the show’s most impactful storylines—the life-changing injury Drake’s character suffered, which left Jimmy Brooks in a wheelchair. This narrative not only defined his character but also resonated deeply with audiences.
Drake’s journey from teen actor to hip-hop heavyweight has been remarkable. Since leaving Degrassi, he has built a career marked by sold-out stadiums and chart-topping hits. Fans are now eagerly awaiting his next album, ICEMAN. Although no release date has been confirmed, singles like “What Did I Miss?” and “Which One,” featuring UK rapper Central Cee, have teased what’s to come. Both tracks surfaced during YouTube livestreams, offering listeners a glimpse of the follow-up to For All The Dogs.
As Degrassi’s legacy is celebrated once more, the documentary underscores how a television series about adolescence helped launch one of music’s most influential stars.
