Collaborating with DEEP VOODOO, the deepfake studio founded by the creators of South Park, Lamar crafted a narrative. It moves effortlessly between society’s revered and controversial figures. The visuals feature sports icons such as Kobe Bryant and O.J. Simpson alongside contentious entertainment personalities like Smollett. This invites viewers to reflect on the intersections of fame, public perception, and scrutiny in a complex cultural landscape.
Smollett’s appearance carries particular weight. In 2019, the former Empire actor was arrested for allegedly staging a hate crime in Chicago. This resulted in a conviction for disorderly conduct. Just months before Lamar’s release, he faced a $130,000 lawsuit and sustained media attention. This context adds a provocative dimension to Lamar’s work. It raises questions about the ethics of portraying a figure mired in controversy and the intentions behind such artistic choices.
Jussie Smollett Responds
In a recent discussion with former NFL quarterback Cam Newton, Smollett spoke about Kendrick’s depiction with measured regard. “I love Kendrick Lamar. What would be the reason for me to have an issue with him? We don’t know each other personally,” he said, emphasizing respect for Lamar’s artistry. “I don’t know what Kendrick meant by the video… So, I respect him as an artist, and that’s about as far as it can go.”
Smollett dismissed any notion of retaliating with a diss track. He noted that ongoing speculation about his legal history is minor compared with more pressing priorities. Following a settlement with the City of Chicago, he has shifted focus toward charitable efforts. This includes donations to local foundations, demonstrating a commitment to community over controversy.
